Four months ago I had no idea I would be starting a blog. Seriously.
I had no idea that I would be writing for an hour nearly every day about topics I loved. Or, that anyone would read what I wrote–let alone thousands of people! Or, that I could make money while doing it.
And, yet I am.
I had always been a closet writer. You know the kind who carried around a small notebook as a kid so I could write down ideas for stories or snippets of poetry I was working on. However, I rarely showed my writing to anyone. In fact it was a HUGE deal when I showed my (now) husband my poetry for the first time. I was so nervous that my hands were shaking!
I had a vague idea that I would love to write a book…someday. And it might be nice to have a poem published in a journal…sometime. I loved reading blogs like Crystal’s Money Saving Mom and Abby’s Just a Girl and Her Blog. Maybe I could do it, too….in the future.
Then I happened to see a small ad on Just a Girl and Her Blog that claimed to be able to help anyone start a blog in just seven days. I was intrigued and clicked on the link. And that simple click changed my life.
I went from having a “someday” mindset to a “hey, I can do this now” frame of mind.
As a part of the seven-day course, I read Abby’s Building a Framework, a step-by-step guide to beginning a successful blog. There were chapters on
-how to purchase a domain name
-how to get a host (with screenshots for the technologically impaired like me)
-how to build great content
-how to upload and format quality images
-and more
Armed with this knowledge, I decided to take the plunge–and The Orthodox Mama was born.
I began The Orthodox Mama for four main reasons:
1. To share my ideas on faith, family, and frugal living.
2. To encourage others in their faith journey and family life.
3. To introduce non-Orthodox to the Orthodox faith in a non-threatening way.
4. To hone my skills as a writer.
And, amazingly, in two and a half months over 10,000 people have visited my little corner of the blogosphere! People from Greece to Serbia, Nicaragua to Hong Kong have stopped by, commented, and shared their thoughts. I have been blessed to be featured on fantastic, well-established blogs like Living Well Spending Less, Money Saving Mom, and Orthodox-Reformed Bridge. I have even been able to make a little money to help support my family.
And, I am starting to work on a book. It’s not someday anymore. It’s now.
Today I am absolutely thrilled to be able to share some great news with you! Abby’s book, Building a Framework: This Ultimate Blogging Handbook has been updated and is launching today!
