Each week I write about the books I’m reading as a part of my Read 100 Challenge, as well as links I love from around the blogosphere.
This has been one of the craziest weeks that I’ve had in a long time. Those of you who have been around for awhile know that I am an extreme Type A person who thrives on routine and schedule. This week has not been a good week on that front.
We drove home from our wonderful vacation to Texas and Oklahoma, where we visited our families. I love road trips. I even wrote about How to Have a Fun Family Road Trip a few weeks ago. But this road trip was not fun. Not even a little bit. You see, we all got a stomach bug on the road. Not fun at all.
All of that to say, I apologize for the irregular posting schedule this week. I will get back into the swing of things this week.
Books I’ve Read
The Divine Adventure: St. Teresa of Avila’s Journeys and Foundations by Tomas Alvarez
I have been inspired by this account of the Western saint, St. Teresa. She founded seventeen Carmelite monasteries and became one of the most traveled women of her time. She also had to deal with the hundreds of details that come with organizing, planning, and setting up all of these monasteries. And yet, she still maintained her spiritual focus and her quiet temper. I struggle with this personally–when things get stressful, I tend to become irritable and quick to yell. Although this book isn’t particularly compelling in its narration, I have still found it inspiring.
Reading in the Wild by Donalyn Miller with Susan Kelley
Donalyn Miller’s The Book Whisperer revolutionized how I teach reading. I now emphasize independent reading and student choice. Miller’s second book gives more of the details that teachers love–how to practically implement her ideas. I am really excited to try them out in this new school year!
