Do you love to read but find yourself reading the same author or genre over and over again? Do you enjoy reading and want to challenge yourself to branch out? Or, do you want to read more but often lack motivation?
Then The Orthodox Mama’s 2016 Reading Challenge is for you!
What is the reading challenge? It’s a fun and simple way to read books this new year. Here are the basics of the challenge:
-You will read one book a month from a specific category (details below)
-You don’t have to read them in the order listed
-At the beginning of each month I will give you many ideas for fantastic books within that category that you just might enjoy
-Throughout the month I will post updates on my Facebook page (if you haven’t started following yet, this would be a great time!), sharing the books I’m reading within that category. You can chime in with what you are reading and get recommendations from other readers.
-At the end of the year we will celebrate our success and share our favorites from 2016 (plus have a pretty awesome giveaway…)!
So, are you in? If you’re not convinced yet, here are the categories:
2016 Reading Challenge
January: A Book that Inspires You
February: A Book About Love
March: A Book Set in Another Time Period
April: A Memoir
May: A Mystery
June: A Nonfiction Book on a Topic That Interests You
July: A Book By An Author You Really Enjoy
August: Something You Should Have Read in School But Didn’t
September: A Newbery Award Winner (The Best Work of Children’s Literature for that year. HERE.)
October: Something Scary
November: A Fantasy
December: A Book Set in Another Country
What To Do
If you would like to join the challenge, you can do any of these three things:
- Download this pretty printable to track your progress
- Follow The Orthodox Mama on Facebook so you can join in the conversation
- Leave a comment below letting me know you’re in!
(Psst. If you’re a bit shy like me, know that you aren’t required to do any of these–they just might make the community experience a bit more fun. You can always join anonymously and enjoy reading some great books on your own this year!)
Next week I will share some ideas for January’s category (A Book That Inspires You) to get you started.
What do you say? Will you give the 2016 Reading Challenge a try? What category are you most excited about?

Alison @ Tickling the Wheat says
Count me in! One of my goals for 2016 is to read 24 books (12 business and 12 personal books). The personal ones will be easy, but I tend to take a long time on business books, so I need some extra motivation!
Sarah says
Woohoo, Alison! I love your goal of reading 12 business books. I’d love to hear your recommendations.
Alison @ Tickling the Wheat says
I’m starting with Made to Stick by Chip and Dan Heath. I’ve seen that on several “need to read” lists. I also really want to go through Blog Beautiful by Marianne Manthey.
I have a ton of marketing and blogging books in my kindle, just waiting to be read, but not every book is worth the time. I’ll keep you updated as I weed through them!
Thanks for organizing this!
Sarah says
I just checked out the summary of Made to Stick and added it to my Books to Read list on my library account. Looking forward to reading it soon. Thanks for the suggestions!
Allison says
I’m in! Can’t wait to get started!
Sarah says
So glad, Allison! I’m excited to see what you choose for January’s book.
Kim says
I going to give it a try! I don’t tend to find much time to read but would like to do it more often. This might help motivate me! I’d love to see your recommendations!
Sarah says
So glad you’re joining us, Kim! I’m really looking forward to giving some recommendations as well. I’m hoping to read 5-10 books in each category to be able to help out with some amazing book pics.
Renee says
This is such a great idea! We have so many did decent things going on this year I would hate to commit right now but this is a great idea to help us work on growing!
Sarah says
You’d be very welcome just to do a month or two as you have time. Anything is better than nothing, right? A couple of years ago I was in a reading slump–plus I had two children under two and a preschooler. There are definitely seasons in our lives when we don’t need to add anything to our “to-do” lists other than rest, family, and faith.
Heather @ Simply Save says
I love this idea! Great inspiration for when you’re not sure what to read next! Thanks for sharing on the Small Victories Sunday Linkup!
