A few of you may be wondering about the “Orthodox” in The Orthodox Mama. Is she Jewish? Greek? Or just hard core?
I am an Eastern Orthodox Christian. The Eastern Orthodox Church is the Church established by Christ and begun by the work of the Holy Spirit through the apostles two thousand years ago. It is the second largest branch of Christianity in the world with around 300 million members.
I have not always been an Orthodox Christian. I plan on sharing my journey to Orthodoxy in another post (it would make this one far too long!). The brief version, however, is that my husband and I both grew up as evangelical Christians, went to a Protestant seminary, and began reading ancient and contemporary Orthodox theologians. What they wrote was so intriguing, that we found ourselves in an Orthodox Church one day and never looked back. We became catechumens and soon joined the Church. We are now raising our children in the Orthodox Church, which is truly our home.
If you would like a fuller description of Orthodoxy, I am happy to answer questions that you may have. I also would recommend reading The Orthodox Church or The Orthodox Way by Timothy (Bishop Kallistos) Ware. My former home parish in Oklahoma has an excellent description on Orthodoxy here, along with a nicely curated selection of articles on a variety of Orthodox topics. But, the best advice I can give is that of the Apostle Philip given to his brother Nathaniel, “Come and See.”
